Real Madrid had preferred to recruit Alipio instead of Coutinho under the presidency of Ramon Calderon 10 years ago as reported in the newspaper Marca on Wednesday. Real actually had the choice between offering a Coutinho of 16 years and not yet famous and a certain Alipio of the same age.
Marca says that the sports director at the time, Miguel Angel Portugal, opted for the latter against 2.5 million euros. Inter Milan then jumped on the opportunity to offer Coutinho for 2 small million. A derisory sum knowing that the Brazilian player should soon be worth 170 in case of transfer to Barca this winter ...
Miguel Angel Portugal nonetheless defended himself for taking this decision, saying on his blog that he was bypassed at the time by his president Ramon Calderon. The cacique merengue had signed Alipio while Portugal was traveling to see play Coutinho in Rio de Janeiro. "When I came back from Brazil, a surprise awaited me, the president had Alipio sign in my absence, it was incredible, but true," he says.
