How Barça will adapt to the demands of financial fair play

The Catalan daily Sport assured last week that "the arrival of Coutinho would place Barça outside the limits allowed by financial fair play". The Blaugrana, who have spent € 307m since this summer (including € 160m for Coutinho) and recovered € 222m from the Neymar clause, have a negative balance of transfers. The Barcelona leaders got to pay Liverpool a quarter of Coutinho's transfer (€ 40m) as a bonus, as they had done with Dortmund for Ousmane Dembélé (€ 105m and similar bonuses), in order to spread the impact of these operations over several seasons.

Club officials must now apply to reduce their payroll, Coutinho's annual salary of around € 14 million a year, compared to € 35 million net for Lionel Messi, of which € 10 million corresponds to his signing bonus of € 50 million. € spread over the next five seasons. Arda Turan (€ 8.5m) is expected to join a Turkish club, while Javier Mascherano is about to engage with Hebei Fortuna (China). Little used, Rafinha, Deulofeu and Aleix Vidal could imitate them this winter.
